My understanding

This is my understanding of the opposition to the interment of Ferdinand Marcos in the LNMB.

Caveat lector.

The ouster of FM was attended by a whole lot of noise about restoring all that was lost: democracy, public wealth, and the psychological well-being of a people. Packaged that way, as the Revolution was, the inevitable conclusion was that without achieving the restoration of those three things, the Revolution would be considered incomplete.

The ouster was the first step, nothing more.

Think of it this way: once you pull out the knife, the wound remains. FM was the knife, and the nation was left with a gaping wound. Does it not make sense that the nation needs to heal that wound before it can even think of touching the knife again?

And without the restoration of those three things, the wound would not heal. Unfortunately, in the years since then, we have managed to maintain a functioning democracy, (while many would contest that, we can agree that we are, at least, not under overt authoritarian rule) but little else.

There is still a lot of talk about unrecovered wealth, isn’t there? And our constant fear of dictatorship - everyone from Cory to Glory has been accused of seeking to perpetuate their hold on the presidency - shows that the psychological healing process is still incomplete.Having emerged from a fearful darkness, we still can’t sleep without a night light.

The wound remains almost as fresh as it was - despite the forgetfulness of most. And now, we are being asked to take this knife again - to hold it once more, and close to the wound it left.

Without even touching the issue of the sensitivities involved, much less the deeper questions of justice, allowing the interment of FM in the LNMB, therefore, would probably feel too much like the ultimate admission that the Revolution has, after 25 years, finally failed. I mean, with FM returning (if only as a ptoma) before all the imperatives of the revolution have been accomplished, what else would you call it?

And this, I think, is the source of much of the opposition to the idea.
